- Christmas Meeting
With Christmas Music By THE LESLIE BELL SINGERS DIRECTED BY DR. LESLIE BELL
Thursday, December 17th, 1953
CHAIRMAN: The President, Mr. A. E. M. Inwood.MR. INWOOD: It is a great pleasure to welcome you here for our Christmas meeting and particularly the boys and girls I see here today. I would like also to welcome that very dear lady I see at table 22, who made it possible for me to be here today-my mother, Mrs. John Inwood.
This year our club has had very successful, though serious meetings, with distinguished speakers, including our formal coronation dinner and our special 50th anniversary meeting. However on the lighter side the climax is reached for 1953 in this festive Christmas gathering with our fair ladies. This is truly representative of peace and goodwill in our community.
Because this club continues to bear that old revered name--"Empire Club", it is possible some persons might be labouring under the quaint idea that we are just a little on the old-fashioned and conservative side. To completely dispel any such ideas, we are going to give evidence of our youthful versatility by presenting to you for your enjoyment the lovely Leslie Bell Choir who sing like angels.
At Christmas time we are apt to reflect, more than usual, upon the past years, and our programme today is intended to help you to recall many happy years and Yuletide seasons as "Cavalcade of Music" will carry us back to 1903 the very year this club was founded. This choir has won international recognition on concert stages, the screen, radio and television broadcasts. Dr. Bell by carefully auditioning thousands of girls has accumulated voices of unusual range which allow the group all the scope of a mixed chorus with the three qualities for which his singers are famous-tonal balance, accurate intonation and flawless diction.
Dr. Bell himself is one of the world's leading choral arranger-conductors and the famous credit line "Arrangement by Leslie Bell" has appeared on music sung by thousands of choristers throughout this continent, England and Australia.
Without further words I am pleased to present Dr. Bell who will introduce his choir.
- THE CHOIR SANG -
Dr. Bell, on behalf of this club I want to thank you and your delightful choir of charming young ladies for coming here today. They were absolutely superb.
